How Can Physiological Testing Help Coaches and Athletes?

To get a perfect measure of fitness and performance it would take a mixture of clinical testing (information gathering) blended with field testing (out on the trails, on your bike or in the pool). This type of testing is not possible as there are too many variables that may influence performance.

The Ideal World

Whilst assessing performance in the field would provide a better assessment of performance ability, the practicality of doing so is out weighed by the difficulty in do so.

The Real World

This is where the major benefit of clinical testing comes in to play as it allows the tester to better isolate specific components related to fitness and performance

Benefits for the athlete and Coach

Clinical testing can limit the performance variable to create an environment where every test is set with a reliable set of factors (inter-test reliability).

• Isolate Specific variables that influence performance

• Identify an athletes physiological strengths and weaknesses

- Allows athletes and coaches to make informed decisions about how training can be modified
- Repeat testing allows athletes and coaches to monitor the effectiveness of training
- Allow athletes and coaches to better individualise training

• Provide baseline data determining appropriate prescription of exercise

• May provide insight into athletes health status

- Disease
- Injury
- Overtraining
- Fatigue

• Physiological testing can serve as a basis of educating athletes and coaches

- Allows coaches and athletes to better understand what they are working with
- Helps athletes and coaches to better understand the demands of their sport
- Correct misconceptions when necessary

REMEMBER: Physiological testing should be used as a training aide and is just one facet of an athlete's preparation.
